Volksmarine 6th Coastal Border Brigade, Baltic Sea, East Germany, 1980s

The security of the Baltic coast was within the responsibilities of the Volksmarine,
while administratively part of the Border Troops. The 6th Coastal Border Brigade  consisted of twelve naval battalions and several boat battalions and companies to guard the East Germany's relatively small coastline along the Baltic Sea.

The shoulder board indicates the rank, seen here is an Ober Maat (Petty Officer)  equivalent of an Army sergeant. It's green piping is the border guards colour.

Coastal border guards used the army uniforms & equipment but kept their naval distinctions.
