In 1994 the process to develop the 6b6 helmet started under the Scientific Research Institute of Steel (NII Stali) located in Moscow. It was adopted by the Russian armed forces in July 2000.
Producing a 6b6 helmet required a lot of labor. Because of high manufacturing cost it is believed that less than 10,000 6b6 helmets were manufactured.
The thickness of the titanium shell is 3mm (0.12 inch), it's inner shell is made of 5mm (0.19 inch) of aramide fibers. Needles to say the helmet provided excellent protection. A size 1 helmet like this one weights roughly 1.61kg (3lb 8 3/4oz). The camouflage paint was part of the manufacture process.
The 6b6 helmet started to be used in action during the second Chechen war (1999-2009) & in the South Ossetia conflict (2008).
